THE BENEFITS OF YOGA

Many people think that yoga is just stretching, and while stretching is certainly involved, yoga is really about creating balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. This is done through the performance of poses or postures, each of which has specific physical and health benefits.

Yoga also involves simple breath awareness and techniques to help with keeping one focused on the movements, helping to prevent injury as well as to balance out one’s energy to either increase it, become more relaxed or both.

Yoga has been widely practiced for thousands of years for health and relaxation, and has evolved into many different types and styles.

It is a no-impact activity, so easy on the joints. Movements are slow and simple, so can be accommodated to those with coordination or cognitive challenges.

OUR THERAPEUTIC YOGA PROGRAM

At Propel Physiotherapy, we believe that yoga is a valuable adjunct to any physiotherapy program. We also believe yoga is for everyone: people of all ages, physical abilities and fitness levels, when adapted by a knowledgeable teacher.

Yoga postures, breath work and meditative movements have the potential to improve your health and well-being, assist in the healing of your injury, and prevent injury when prescribed by a qualified therapist. With a regular yoga practice one can:

Private one-on-one yoga sessions

Enjoy the benefits of your yoga practice being observed and adapted along the way.

Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
$100/hr per person

* Five 1-hour slots available for booking

Group yoga classes – Therapeutic Flow Yoga

This small group class is ideal for people experiencing persistent health conditions – physical and/or mental, as well as mobility-related challenges. The instructor & therapist will adapt each class in order to address the participants’ specific and changing needs. While the linking of the breath and movement will form the core of this practice, we will draw upon myriad techniques – such as conscious breath regulation, meditative practices, and the use of sound – to improve health and well being and increase quality of life. Most importantly, students will be empowered and supported to be active participants in their healing journey.

Tuesdays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
$25 per person per class

* Class size limited to 6; registration required

Jessica Cowan-Dewar
Jessica Cowan-Dewar Yoga Therapist
Jessica Cowan-Dewar is a certified yoga instructor and yoga therapist with specialized training in restorative yoga, yin yoga, yoga for anxiety, stress, trauma, and PTSD, and Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY). She is known for her calm and competent teaching style and is skilled at creating a safe and non-judgmental environment for people to explore various healing practices.
