ROBOTIC ASSISTED GAIT TRAINING
Robotic assisted gait training (RAGT) or robotic assisted walking is cutting-edge technology used in the rehabilitation of neurological injuries and conditions like spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy.
For example, after spinal cord injury the nerves supplying different parts of the body (arms and legs) may be affected and the signal to turn on and off those muscles may be absent or weak. A specific type of robotic assisted device can allow spinal cord injured clients to perform movements and function that might be otherwise impossible.
Robotic assisted devices are also used to enhance the rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and conditions such as osteoarthritis of the knee and hip, deconditioning after injury. By pairing exercise and functional movements (sit to stand, stairs, kneeling) using RAGT we are able to improve client’s patterning, strength and endurance during all types of movements.
ROBOTIC ASSISTED TECHNOLOGY
There are two main types of robotic assisted devices. Firstly, there are devices that move on their own regardless of what the client is doing. Secondly, there are devices that augment or assist the active movements of the client.
There have been significant advancements in the technology over the past ten years and this will continue to evolve in the upcoming age or artificial intelligence or AI. There are people currently using some of these devices on a daily basis to help with all kinds of activities of daily living – getting the mail, going up and down stairs, doing the laundry.
At Propel Physiotherapy we use cutting edge technology that is provided by the Keeogo™ which uses Dermoskeleton™ technology. The device’s assistance is adjustable and is meant to complement one’s own strength. Dermoskeleton design is slim and non-intrusive to provide strength, stability, security and the ability to move in a normal, unrestricted manner in day to day life.
OTHER MOBILITY DEVICES
We also use the Keeogo robotic assisted walking device in conjunction with other advanced technology devices such as the LiteGait, Bioness and Odstock foot drop stimulators and most types of AFO’s and foot ups.
Our experienced clinicians have experience working with a variety of conditions including: spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, post-surgical (total knee and hip replacements) and a range of complex orthopedic injuries.
OUR LOCATIONS
Keeogo Assistive Device for Walking
Julia, a University School student in Hamilton, Ontario, sustained a stroke in 2013, which affected her mobility on the left side of her body resulting in limitations to daily activities. In this video, Julia explains how wearing the Keeogo™ walking assistance device developed by B-TEMIA provides her with significant independence in her daily life, and enables her to do things like dance with her friends, climb stairs, work in a laboratory, and do without her walker or cane.

After a traumatic injury I was referred to Amanda at Propel for physiotherapy. Amanda is amazing and I attribute the progress I have made thus far to her. Through her I’ve also been referred to other services offered at Propel, including massage therapy and pelvic physiotherapy and everyone I have worked with is excellent. The staff at Propel genuinely care about their clients and seek a holistic approach to recovery. I recommend the clinic and their services to everyone I know who is seeking treatment for injuries and pain. Thank you, Propel!
