WHAT IS FUNCTIONAL ELECTRICAL STIMULATION?
Functional Electrical Stimulation or FES applies electrical currents to activate nerves in extremities affected by injury or illness. It is most beneficial when combined with functional movements and tasks to promote normal patterning.
Promoting normal movement patterns leads to adaptive neuroplasticity and improvement in function. Our physiotherapists use FES to restore function of paralyzed muscles, weakness and atrophy after a neurological injury.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FES?
Functional Electrical Stimulation can improve functional movements such as walking, running, stepping, reaching, grasping. It strengthens weak muscles and inhibits spasticity (inappropriate co-contraction). In addition, FES promotes normal motor patterning through adaptive neuroplasticity rather than maladaptive. Lastly, it can improve shoulder subluxation and weakness after stroke.
WHAT CONDITIONS ARE TREATED BY FES?
Weakness of the muscles is a common condition after a brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis or other neurological conditions. Functional Electrical Stimulation has been used for years to facilitate recovery after a neurological injury. It has proven to be safe and effective when used properly with the following conditions:

After a traumatic injury I was referred to Amanda at Propel for physiotherapy. Amanda is amazing and I attribute the progress I have made thus far to her. Through her I’ve also been referred to other services offered at Propel, including massage therapy and pelvic physiotherapy and everyone I have worked with is excellent. The staff at Propel genuinely care about their clients and seek a holistic approach to recovery. I recommend the clinic and their services to everyone I know who is seeking treatment for injuries and pain. Thank you, Propel!
