Often times, our clients’ sleep quality is negatively impacted by their injuries. This typically initiates an important discussion about sleep hygiene, set up, and support. One product that we might recommend, if appropriate, is the Pillowise personalized orthopedic pillow, which is designed to adapt to the contours of your neck, and gives great support.

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of our lives, affecting our physical and mental well-being. The importance of a good night’s sleep cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts our productivity, mood, and overall health.

While many factors contribute to a restful night’s sleep, creating a restful environment is at the top of the list. This includes making sure your bed and pillow provide the correct support and comfort to ensure you wake up and move about less.

In this blog post, we will delve into the concept and technology behind Pillowise orthopedic pillow and explore how a pillow can change the way we sleep and improve our health.

About the Pillowise Orthopedic Pillow

In 2013, a Dutch physical therapist together with a company called United Comfort Industries used their combined 50 years of experience to design a new way to view the pillow. For all of history we have been able to purchase shoes of a certain size so this company asked, “why can’t we also have our personal pillow size based on our body measurements?”

Pillowise has taken the concept of customization to a whole new level in the realm of sleep. They believe that the ideal pillow should be tailored to your unique body shape, sleep position, and comfort preferences. Pillowise uses cutting-edge technology to create a personalized orthopedic pillow that is designed to fit you perfectly, ensuring a better night’s sleep.

Registered physiotherapist Hoong Phang talks about the benefits of a personalized pillow and how your physiotherapist can measure you for your custom fit.

Customization is an easy four-step process. Measurements are taken of your shoulder width, neck circumference, and neck height, as well as information on sleep position (side, stomach or back) and mattress firmness (medium, soft or firm).

Here are some deign specifications:

  • Pillow size: 22 inch x 14 inch
  • Core material: 100% premium Dutch memory foam
  • Cover materials: Moisture regulating 100% Tencel
  • Cover removable and machine washable at 70°F

Propel Physiotherapy clients who have used the Pillowise products are fascinated by the set up and the measurement process. It is usually the first time they have been measured for a pillow, and asked about their preferred sleeping position and mattress firmness. That added level of personalization demonstrates to our clients that the Pillowise products aim to account for their individual body structure, size, and sleeping pattern.

From a comfort level, the foam has been reported to keep its integrity for a very long time, and we know that the temperature is provides (cooling, less sweating) is a positive environmental variable for a good night’s sleep.

Can the Right Pillow Make a Difference?

Traditional pillows come in a one-size-fits-all design with little consideration for individual preferences and sleeping habits. This approach may work for some, but it often leaves others struggling to find the right pillow that provides adequate support and comfort.

A recent study by Yamada et al., 2023, the group investigated if custom pillow heights would be associated with decreased symptoms in people suffering from neck and shoulder pain. Their study concluded that taking into account a person’s biometric dimensions (including age and BMI) and pairing it with the appropriate pillow height may lead to decreased pain and improved rest throughout the night.

This study looked at results for up to three months after initial trial of their pillows, and there were also positive correlations between neck/shoulder pain scores, in addition to daily life satisfaction scores.[i]

In summation, it is important that your pillow is not too high or too low. A pillow customized to your size and sleep position will perfectly align your cervical spine and keep you aligned throughout the night.

Pillowise Junior for Kids with “Tech Neck”

Besides offering orthopedic pillows for adults, Pillowise also has pillows designed specifically for children ages 4-15. Since children spend so much time using electronic devices, they can develop what is called “Tech Neck” over time. Pillowise is able to reduce the negative effects of this issue passively while your child sleeps. More information on Pillowise Junior can be found at www.pillowisejunior.com.
