Yoga Therapist

Jessica Cowan-Dewar is a certified yoga instructor and yoga therapist with specialized training in restorative yoga, yin yoga, yoga for anxiety, stress, trauma, and PTSD, and Trauma-Sensitive Yoga (TSY). She is known for her calm and competent teaching style and is skilled at creating a safe and non-judgmental environment for people to explore various healing practices.
She completed her first yoga teacher training in 2012 and has been practicing, studying and teaching yoga since. Jessica’s passion for and commitment to improving health and wellness though the sharing of yoga and other mind-body techniques has led her to work with both groups and individuals in the healthcare, correctional, community, and studio settings.

Education & Training

Jessica’s interest in the health field started decades ago and led to Jessica receiving her certification as a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at SOLO Wilderness Medical School in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
She went on to study the ecological determinants of health in society at McGill University where during her final year she completed a rural health research program in Panama under the guidance of McGill University and Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute.
Jessica worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Studies in Primary Care at Queen’s University before moving the U.K. for graduate school. She received her MSc in Reproductive and Sexual Health Research from the London School of Hygiene of Tropical Medicine, University of London in 2007.
It was through Jessica’s experience working and conducting research in the field of public health, specifically at the intersection of HIV/AIDS and gender-based violence (GBV) in rural South Africa that she became aware of the potential of yoga as a therapeutic modality for physical and mental health conditions.

Passions & Pursuits

When not teaching yoga and practicing as a yoga therapist, Jessica loves spending time in nature with her husband and toddler. She loves outdoor adventure and has hiked, canoed, and sea kayaked in regions as diverse as the Canadian Arctic, Mexico, India, Nepal, Botswana, and Tanzania.
Jessica is a dedicated student of Pilates, an avid reader, and enjoys cooking healthful food for her family and friends. Jessica’s life has been deeply enriched by yoga and mindfulness and considers it an enormous privilege to share these practices with others.
